What year is it?
It is hard to believe that the blatant power grab by party bosses apparently underway in Bergen County's less-than-illustrious Democratic Party could take place in 2007. That's not to suggest that human nature has changed much since the heyday of the political machines. The desire for power and influence and all their attendant benefits, financial and otherwise, are as alive and well today as they were in Boss Tweed's day. What is so surprising about the thinly disguised efforts to concentrate control of the Democratic Party in the hands of those with the power to bestow favors on the rank and file (i.e. the Chairman and his inner circle) is that they would clearly set back the process of fixing the many problems that plague our area, and yet there is no shame or reluctance among party leaders to introduce these harmful changes.
By controlling the use of the Democratic party name and allowing only candidates who repeatedly pass their test to use it, Joseph Ferriero and his allies effectively reserve for themselves the power to recall any sitting legislators who do not meet with their approval. And forget about any new blood, unless, of course, it is handpicked by Ferriero & Co. Unfortunately, placing the Democratic Party in the hands of select few will do little to harm the general support that the party enjoys, as the area's Republican Party is weak and fractured, giving the Democratic machine free license to have its way.
What is its way? It is the way of pay to play, the way of influence peddling and protection of their own at the expense of the taxpayer. It is the way of inefficiency and waste. While this is wrong anytime, it is especially inappropriate when many residents are struggling under the weight of a rapidly increasing tax burden.
In the absence of a credible alternative, it leaves many with no choice but to support State Sen. Weinberg and her two protegés in the Assembly whom Ferriero seeks to oust, Gordon Johnson and Valerie Vainieri Huttle. While one might question whether they are ultimately the best candidates for the job, there is no doubt that it is in the best interests of District 37 voters to push back against the growing influence of the Democratic party organization, and specifically the boss at the top of it. With Ferriero already having dipped his toe into local affairs over the past year, Teaneck voters should be concerned enough to lead the charge.
UPDATE (Friday, February 2): The Records reports the narrow defeat of the proposed rule change. While county residents may breathe a sigh of relief, it should be a shallow one, as continued vigilance is required to protect the common interest from those seeking to profit from the system.

But we go back to the question ..
With all Loretta.s power WHAT HAS SHE DONE FOR TEANECK. It is her LACK of Action that has opened the door for Ferriero in Teaneck. Lets explore and see if he can bring us more and help close some of the gaps. He certainily can not do worst.
I somewhat disagree -- while I am no fan of Loretta as far as what she has done (or not done)in terms of local politics, at the state level she has done a credible job of working on women's and health care issues, as well as building a network of relationships in the Legislature, which is always important when the chips are down. It's been interesting watching the powerplay between her and Boss Ferriero, but given the choices, I would back Loretta any day. Just remember how blatantly F. supported Gussen and Rudolph this past year for council, and how quickly Rudolph got his payoff job...
From now on I'm voting a straight Legalize Marijuana Party Ticket.
Swurgle,
Since you and a bunch of others on your blog convinced yourselves to vote Ferrierocrat in last November's county elections, I think you should vote that ticket from now on. Just lay off the laughin' tabacca for about a month before election day, okay? :-)
THE CHIPS ARE DOWN. AGAIN WHAT HAS SHE DONE HERE...
To those posters hammering away at the Weinberg record:
It's not about supporting Weinberg or her allies, it's about preventing our district and municipality from succumbing to the forces of political manipulation. It's about preventing the culture of insider politics and special favors from taking root. The way the Ferriero machine operates is not just unsavory, but it advances the interests of the party and its contributors above those of the taxpayers.
I cannot see how anyone would applaud a move toward stricter party discipline and more centralized control under a boss with questionable methods and motives unless they stood to benefit from it form it personally (with a cushy appointment, a government contract, a chauffered rides to a sporting event in a county vehicle, or the like). Is there an ordinary taxpayer out there prepared to sign on to such a Devil's bargain?
Teaneck Blog,
While I agree with you in principle, I go back to what I have already seen demonstrated over the years -- LW also practices "payback" in a big way, and is quite capable of using her PR machine and network to undercut anyone who stands in her way.
I am not really interested in defending the State Senator's record against her critics, as I am often one of them. I can, however, say that we're better off now that the party that has a hammerlock on our district is going to keep its nomination process a little more open.
Fatty Arbuckle Lost. Democracy is still alive in the perversion called the Bergen County Democratic party.
Teaneck continues to get the short end of the stick. LW has done NOTHING noteworthy to help us get the prpoper school funding. And if she were truely supportive towards Teaneck, SHE would be extremely vocal in an effort to repeal the antiquated blue laws. So please tell me What has she done for us lately???
Other than approve the bill list and budget, what has the council done for us as well?
Only slightly off topic, but...
Did you see the picture on the front page of the Record today (Feb 13)? In the article on the Bergen Dems' extravagant spending on parties, there's a picture of County Executive/Deer-in-the-Headlights Dennis McNerney getting a high-five at his $17,000 victory bash last November.
Who's the guy partially hidden by the hand-slap?
Ferriero is a union busting thug. Ferriero is a partner at the scandal plaqued law firm of Scarinci and Hollenback. How did a democratic party get taken over by a union buster?
That firm has Hudson county locked up tight and takes in millions every year by harassing whistleblowers right off their jobs.
Joe must go!
