Fixing what is broken
At what point do seemingly isolated incidents involving the endangerment of students in the Teaneck public school system become a cause for community concern about the system itself? With three troubling high profile stories alleging wrongdoing and negligence by adults entrusted with the care of Teaneck's youth swirling in the media in recent weeks, it may be time to stop viewing these three unfortunate episodes as misfortunes that have befallen Teaneck and start asking what is being done by officials to fix a school system that is developing a very poor reputation for protecting the welfare of youngsters.
The three events in question are, of course, the ongoing criminal proceedings against former Teaneck High School Principal Joseph White, the tragic story of the death of a local teenager on an allegedly poorly supervised THS-sponsored trip to Africa this spring, and the shocking charges that an acclaimed middle school teacher repeatedly engaged in sexual activity with a student for several years, on school grounds and elsewhere. While a presumption of innocence certainly applies, this is quite a lot for a district of only about 4,000 students to be dealing with at one time. Is it mere coincidence, or is there a systemic problem?
On Friday, Bergen County prosecutor John L. Molinelli was quoted in The Record in conjunction with a story about the various charges filed against teacher James Darden. While his ominous comments may have been directed only at the circumstances surrounding this particular case, they apply nearly as well for the others.
"I have to wonder about security in the building and how something like this can take place as frequently as it did over such a long period of time the way it did," Molinelli said at a news conference. "It concerns me, and I hope tonight it concerns some school board members in Teaneck -- at least I hope so."Any district can be victimized by a lone sicko or a freak mishap on a trip. What does it say about those in charge when the Teaneck schools is suffering through three very public investigations into such incidents at once? Are we just extremely unlucky, or is nobody watching over the employees in the Teaneck public schools?
The apparent complacency voiced by Superintendent John Czeterko in response to the Darden case does not provide much reassurance that officials feel they have anything when it comes to ensuring student safety, or even any indication that the district may be failing in its responsibilities to students and parents alike.
"We value teachers who stay after school," Czeterko told The Record about Darden. "He was a valued and trusted employee. If he violated that trust, we're stunned."
There are many reasons underlying the dented confidence in the public school system. Some are demographic, and are almost completely beyond the control of the district. Others are financial, for which the district can bear no more than partial responsibility. Still others are created by the proliferation of incidents such as these. The question is, can anything be done to reassure the community that the schools remain a safe place for our children, and if so, will those things be done?
Update: See this piece from Tuesday's Record detailing some new measures to be put in place in response to the Darden case.
Update #2: There is more on the district's efforts to calm the community in Wednesday's Record, including an account of a meeting for middle school parents.

I am a graduate of the Teaneck High School Class of 1980. Teaneck teachers having sex with students is nothing new. I can remember incidents going back to my years as a student at Benjamin Franklin JHS.

Whoops, fixed it...
The appalling problem of adults in positions of authority sexually preying on young people is hardly limited to Teaneck. The widespread cases of abuse Catholic Clergy come to mind as well as prominent cases involving Rabbis. Recently, there have even been several local cases involving female teachers/administrators taking advantage of male students.
Teaneck should do more to protect students in the same way that places of worship, parochial schools and private schools should do more.
As for the tragedy in Ghana. It's a horrific nightmare for those parents that is entirely unrelated and completely different than the allegations of abuse by teachers / administrators. The situations should not be conflated.
I totally agree Swurgle, and am always upset by the "gunnysacking" that goes on in this town. And since when do we accept quotes published in the RECORD or SUBURBANITE as complete statements, and not (as so often happens) partial quotes taken out of context. YOu may accuse Mr. Czeterko of various things, but complacency over security is certainly not one of them. He has done more to beef up security in this district and maintain an excellent working relationship with the police department over the short time he has been superintendent than any of his predecessors. Also, the story on Darden contains only the initial public information, and I am sure there is quite a bit that is still being investigated. While tragic, I prefer to wait for those conclusions before laying blame.

Of course this case is very different than the other two. But can you say for certain that it does not reflect a pervasive laxity in addressing safety concerns? While the investigation remains ongoing, there appear to be indications that chaperones may not have been careful or watchful enough. Coincidence, or a reflection of a casual approach toward safeguarding students throughout the system, perhaps the same casual approach that allowed two alleged sexual predators to go unchecked for so long? Don't misread my point. I am not indicting the system or officials over what might really be an anomalous run of terrible luck. I am simply asking the questions that I do not hear many others asking in the aftermath of an extraordinary series of events.
I don't know who the chaperones on the ghana trip were but I can imagine that they are devastated and will carry the burden of this event and the what-ifs in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
As for the sex predator teachers: White apparently preyed on troubled kids who would be less likely to be believed if they reported his inappropriate advances. As for Darden - we don't know the full story yet.
I suspect that both Darden and White got a pass on suspicious behavior due to their popularity and reputation for motivating and inspiring difficult to reach students.
As for what the schools can do about predator teachers: educate kids about the threat without inculcating them with a fundamental distrust of their teachers (a tough one I admit) and create opportunities for students to anonymously send messages of help or report suspicious activities.
"As for the tragedy in Ghana. It's a horrific nightmare for those parents that is entirely unrelated and completely different than the allegations of abuse by teachers / administrators. "
Not really. The chaperones did not do the job they where there to do, protect our kids!
"Teaneck should do more to protect students in the same way that places of worship, parochial schools and private schools should do more."
Actually the Catholic schools do, do more to protect our kids than our local public schools. Perhaps the Super should contact some of them and get some ideas, perhaps lets start with background checks on ALL people coming in contact with kids!
anon07666
I don't know all the details of the case, but generally speaking, chaperones are parent volunteers, not school administrators -
"protect our kids" is the same as protect their kids.
I agree with Swurgle, the burden of their lapse of jugdement will be a tough one to carry.
First Joe White
Second Joe White
Now this idiot
They should be castrated and tortured!!!!

From the Washington Post, February 19, 2005:
More than 1,000 people reported to civil or church authorities in 2004 that they had been sexually abused as children by Roman Catholic priests, the second-largest number of allegations for any year on record, the U.S. bishops' conference said yesterday.
During 2004, the church spent $157 million on legal settlements and other costs related to sex abuse. It received allegations against 756 priests and deacons, half of whom had previously been named in similar accusations. It temporarily removed more than 300 clergy members and permanently defrocked 148, church officials said.

The group leader and head chaperone was the teaneck high school art teacher Ms.Ware. She is a school employee and she should of been doing her job, since we have a dead kid I guess she did not and she has even stated that she did not do her job!
"Ware acknowledged that bed checks were not conducted.."
""These are mainly juniors and seniors, 17 and 18 years old," Ware said. "You give them your expectation of what you expect. I really trusted these kids."

Actually, make that 4 troubling data points. Don't forget to include our 55K per year messenger and convicted drug felon. Evidently, he reported his conviction to school officials who told him not to worry about it. It took the state to bounce him from payroll since indv. with felony convictions cannot be employed by schools.
How many data points are required before it is fair to suggest their is a problem?
"Update: See this piece from Tuesday's Record detailing some new measures to be put in place in response to the Darden case."
I wonder WHY it took this long to put these things into effect.
But as long as teachers can meet privatly with kids in closed rooms this will continue to go on!
As an old time retired teacher I can tell you the rule we were given decades ago was never to be alone with a student in a room with a closed door. Of course, that was not in the Teaneck system, where they are just now waking up to the obvious.
It is a sad fact, but it is precisely the teachers who stay after school and form close relationships with students that parents should think hard about. Not all of course, but it seems to be a profile that all too often fits teachers accused and convicted (and sometimes acquitted)of criminal acts with children.
It is too many times, the teachers that volunteer to spend their time "helping" the children (and in many cases they do!). They are frequently the teachers who parents adore and never suspect would perpetrate such crimes against their chldren.
I have read enough reports and have heard enough stories now to sadly realize that it might be exactly these beloved teachers who should be looked at more closely.

My step-son is a high school history teacher. He notes the following: 1.never touch a student for any reason. 2. Never get in a situation where you and a student are alone in a classroom,EVER. If, tutoring or "teaching" after school, NEVER work with fewer than three students at the sametime and always leave the school together as a group.
How tragic that the assumption is the teacher is a molester.
Anon at 12:30:
As an old retired teacher, you apparently forgot the basic rule of intellectual honesty: don't spout off with statements you don't know the truth of. If you read the record article today there IS a rule about keeping the doors open with students. They are not "just waking up to the obvious"; you (and others) are just over-salivating to (dare I say welcome?) red-meat news that feeds your active prejudice against the Teaneck school system.
If this rule was in place at the Teaneck schools than this would never of been able to occur!
So this leads me to believe that 1. it was not in effect or 2. it was in effect and it was not enforced.
If in the case of #2 then the question is WHY was it not enforced?
Did anybody else go to the meeting at TJ?
Anon07666, may I remind you that Darden is innocent until proven guilty? Two of my kids had him as a teacher and say that during his after-school tutoring sessions, the door was always open.
What hasn't been said is why was a school trip to Ghana - a 2 week jaunt - approved? Even though a week of it was during a school break, how did we justify a week out of school for students and for teachers & staff (effecting a much larger group of students)? Were the teachers and staff paid for this time? Was it actually an official school field trip?
Who pays for this trip? The students or the Board of Ed? Please dont let it be the latter...
I believe the students raised the funds for the trip.
"Anon07666, may I remind you that Darden is innocent until proven guilty? Two of my kids had him as a teacher and say that during his after-school tutoring sessions, the door was always open."
Is that like Joe White is innocent??
In regards to your kids, perhaps he did not find any appeal in them so he left them alone and the door open?!
Karin, too bad he wasn't around when you went to school in Teaneck. I'm sure you'd be proud and flattered by his attention, you sicko.
Yeah Karin, I suppose your children have the type of rugged good looks that child molestors can't resist.

Teachers fucking students occured when I was in school in Teaneck. This is nothing new (as another poster pointed out) other than it has moved from the high school to the middle school now.
I am sure that I would of reported him to the proper people if he was around when I was in middle school!

Well, lets see...they are mighty good looking kids.
As to kid molestors, I make sure that I keep them out of public schools that have issues with hiring teachers or admin that can not keep their ands off kids, so yeah they pretty much are not attractive to kid touchers!

Any hey anon, thanks for the concern over my kids, perhaps you should be more worried about your kids though especially if they are in the P.S. here in town.
I mean uou got kids dropping dead and being molested in our local schools,YIKES!!
anon-
are you upset that your kids where not molested? by your comment it sure sounds like it, you sicko!
Gosh, Karin, have you already forgotten about all the press concerning priests molesting kids in churches and Catholic schools just a couple of years ago? As for the private schools, people I know whose kids attend them tell me they stand on their heads to make sure any matters like these get hushed up quick.
Blame one, blame them all is never a good policy, and it's not fair to the over 500 very good teachers in our public schools.
I think if you look you will see the of Priests molesting kids was far less than teachers molesting students.
As for the schools my kids go to, no teacher has ever molested a kid or kids. The parents would not cover it up but be the first to sting the prep up by his nuts!
How do you get a nun pregnant?
Dress her up as an altar boy!!

The comments written thus far on this matter are truely troubling. They are bigoted and down right hideous in that many of you seem to think if a teacher cares about their students and offers extra help they are sexual perverts. How dare you, since most adolescents are molested by family members does that mean all parents are sexual deviants? Neither Mr White or Mr Darden are convicted of crimes except here beacuse these comments imply that it is highly unlikely that they are innocent.
I don't know if they are or not but it is not impossible for this to be untrue and until actual information is made available we will not know.
The Ghana incident is a tragic but until the actual cause of death is discovered pointing figures does nothing.
It would be nice to think that this community is more interested in finding the truth; preventing all misdoings and helping the community to heal.
Somehow this doesn't appear to be the case.
To the 1980's graduate who says that sex with students is common place. Why didn't you say something then? Is the teacher/administrator/worker still working for the district? Has your knowledge put other students in harms way? Do you care? Where you invovled, or is this hearsay?
Be careful of blanket statements, teaching is an extremely difficult profession. Soon no one will want to be one.
Yes the Ghana death was tragic, but we do know for a fact as Ms. Ware (teacher and chaperone) stated NO BED CHECKS DONE!
They are bigoted and down right hideous in that many of you seem to think if a teacher cares about their students and offers extra help they are sexual perverts.
Offer all the extra help you want but follow the BOE's rules, DOORS OPEN etc.
To Anonymous 1:55PM,
Thank goodness you are sounding notes of caution and common sense. I totally agree that outrageous statements are too easy to make on these blogs, and make Teaneck sound like all 39,000 residents are polarized and nasty human beings. While I know a few with pretty sharp tongues, most of my friends and neighbors are pretty content and go about their business of working and raising their children. It would be a much higher-leve dialogue if we didn't try so hard to provoke each other.
Here is another "lovely" update ...
Teacher 'admits' to student sex

Read your newspaper articles closely. Darden didn't 'admit' to anything. It was an action by the D.A. to try this in the media. In addition to being concerned about our schools, we also need to be concerned with making sure everyone gets a fair and unbiased trial in the courts.
Read your newspaper articles closely.
I did thank you. My point was to post the link to the new article, the Record is the one that came up with that headline by the way.
You might want to post another UPDATE..
