Casting a wary eye on Teaneck politics and municipal affairs

Weekend fun

As reported in this week's Suburbanite, several dozen realtors and residents met with Mayor Katz and Township Manager Fall last week to review issues of mutual concern. By all accounts, the dialogue was fruitful as a variety of topics were discussed candidly. As Howard Prosnitz writes in his account of the meeting, Teaneck Firefighter John Grado made a cryptic remark about a "adversarial feeling" that is evident when dealing with township officials, especially in one particular department. This week's question is: who could he possibly be referring to? Post your guesses in the comments section.

PS: Don't cheat by looking at Mayor Katz's response to the comments in the course of which he spills the beans.

I can't wait to see all the guesses! It is quite the shock to hear that a builder has had a negative experience with one of the Teaneck departments and that "a friend's wife had returned in tears" from the department in question. Could it be the Health Department? No, maybe it was that nasty Purchasing Department...

Kidding aside, it is appalling that the answer to this question is so obvious. By what right does a certain group of Township employees, paid out of taxpayers' pockets, lord its authority over residents and their contractors alike? Rudeness has no place in any municipal office, let alone one which is charged with dealing with the public and helping people to comply with Teaneck's complicated code.
Let's hope Mayor Katz's claim that they are "trying to make changes" it is true and that the Township is rid of this embarrassment soon.

There are other departments/positions that also require immediate change.

Maybe change should start with the Manager.

FYI, the Suburbanite, as it is wont to do, misspelled Mr. Grado's name.

To give a contrarian view based on a rather limited recent experience, we recently gutted and redid our bathroom. While our contractor dealt with getting the permits, I had to deal with three separate interim and final inspections for the construction, plumbing, and electrical work. Although I wish one person had been a little clearer on what he wanted in terms of circuity at the main box, I found all of them to be courteous. In fact a second guy who looked at the electric was proactive in suggesting a solution to a minor problem.

Thanks for the tip. I corrected it in my post so as not to compound the Suburbanite's sloppy error...

With the summer quickly approaching, that comment is a great way to start discussing the upcoming 2008 elections. Any rumors on who is is stepping into the ring?

I hope the current council naysayers will finally stand down.

Looks like there will be several anonymous candidates running for Counci in 2008. I hope they are all registered voters.

Given the skewed results of the Board of Ed election, it will certainly be a free-for-all.

Who is up for re-election?

What is this, the 1950's? There is no place in this forum for that kind of trash talk! How dare you spout such crap.

So the gangs that are in Teaneck are not the typical "black" gangs? Do we have "asian" gangs or "latino" gangs here in town instead? I thought the crips where a black gang

Gangs, no matter what color or race have no place in Teaneck. The gang topic should make for an interesting debate in the upcoming elections. It will be interesting to see how many candidates want to pursue a shared services approach with the neighboring townships.

The Africa comment simply shows that people will say anything when they think they are posting anonymously.

Teaneck has had a known gang problem for many years. Do you really think that they are going to do anything about it now?
All I see is another tax hike because some parents can not be parents to their kids!

I apologize for the outrageous and blatantly offensive comments that have appeared here over the last few days. My heretofore unstated policy has been to remove all comments that were, in my judgment, just inflammatory and off-topic and intended purely to insult individuals or groups. I was not online over the holiday weekend and therefore missed a few that others have since replied to. I have since taken those down.

There will be 3 council seats up for grabs in the next election. If "THEY" will not do anything to address the issue, then "WE" must replace them with someone who will.

The only way to get the situation to change is to get involved in creating the solution.

SOLUTION:

DO NOT ALLOW MONICA TO CONTINUE ON THE COUNCIL

It would seem that "WE" have not been real good at getting someone in office to solve the problem, once again this gang problem is not something "new" to Teaneck.

Lad Bell for Mayor

Bill Brennan for Manager

Correct, "WE" should shoulder some of the blame for not selecting the right people to address the issue. However, the upcoming elections give you the opportunity to hold the incumbents who have been around for several years responsible to their lack of action.

As far as the the gang problem in Teaneck not being a "new" issue. You are correct there too, but neither are Jackie and Monica and both are up for re-election. Maybe it is time for something "new" on the council.

There is no magical overnight solution to this issue and one can not be fostered if all you want to do is complain.

Who is "we" and who is "they?"

At 1:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe that

"THEY" = council
"WE" = Teaneck Voters

Look at the Anonymous post at 10:56 AM. It was in response to a post asking if the gang issues should be an issue for the 2008 elections.

Oh sure, like the "new" council members care so much about the gang issue! I agree with you about Monica, she has been a negative unimpresive council member from the start with no real solutions to bring to the table, but Jackie has served this town well for many years and worked hard as a council person and as mayor to address the many issues of our changing demographics in Teaneck. She wasn't always supported by some previous councilmembers, but they always worked together through their differences.

We cannot just sit back and accept the finger-pointing and blame being leveled by one section of the community towards the other -- it doesn't do us any good. Let's come together to support the positive efforts being made -- TCT (Teaneck Comes Together), the Alpha Achievers mentoring project at BF and TJ, the great turnout at the Cedar Lane festival last Monday -- and come up with other ways to reach more of our youth.
