Off the wall
Is this letter, printed in the August 16, 2006 edition of the Suburbanite, authentic?
You decide.
TO THE EDITOR:
Suburbanite writer Howard Prosnitz has done a tremendous service to the Teaneck community by following the activities of the recently elected council.
Those of our council who want to wrest control of the independently elected school board is an attempt to gut its budget. While promising to lower taxes, the view of many in my Orthodox community is "...we don't use the school system (we send our children to private yeshivas)...so why should we pay for it!"
The takeover of a duly elected chamber would violate its sovereignty and autonomy, and is probably illegal anyway. What would the council do next? Eliminate rent control to further enhance their personal wealth at renters' expense?
Furthermore, the recent refusal by council members to avoid illegal campaign tactics is a de facto admission to their questionable actions to get elected- and even worse, their arrogance to say...and we'll do it again!"
The worst kept secret in the Orthodox community is that the team of Feit/Rudolph/Gussen were encouraged to run for office by Mayor Katz and then by furtive vote elect him mayor late on a Saturday night. As Bob Dylan sang, "You don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."
With a county and state wide investigation going on, I call for all four of my fellow Orthodox Jews to admit to their illicit activities, step down, move on (or perhaps even move out of Teaneck) and avoid a scandal that will destroy our reputation in the community.

Doubtful.
I love people who speak for the Orthodox (or for that matter any) community and no one has ever heard of them. I'm betting this is a clumsy attempt at discrediting the council. Let's not be overconfident, though. There are stupid people in the Orthodox community too. Orthodox or not, the author is a nut job.
so far i have found no david friedman in teaneck, nor the shul listings
doesn't the suburbanite contact people to verify the authenticity, and at least a street address?
The suburbanite contacts people to confirm identities.
Who is this mysterious traitor!?!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Suburbanite does not verify the authenticity of every letter it receives.
I don't actually have an opinion either way as to whether this is real, which is why I wanted to see what others thought. There is enough hysterical ranting in other Suburbanite letters (and in blogs, for that matter!) that it is not out of the realm of possibility that there is someone out there who sincerely holds the views in this letter and would not be embarrassed to air them in a public forum. On the other hand, this particular combination of outrageous allegations and demands seems just a little bit too far out there to be believable.
Long ago, in the 1990's, the SUBURBANITE made some efforts to verify letters before printing them. This hasn't happened in a long time, and of course letters like this are the result. It's a shame, because it is a distraction from the real discussion about polarization and which issues are really representative of the concerns of the Teaneck community.
He does NOT speak for me.
Everytime I've written a letter to the Suburbanite, I've gotten a phone call confirming my identity.
Everytime I've written a letter to the Suburbanite, I've gotten a phone call confirming my identity.
I have never gotten such a call.
So, now we know that TeaneckBlog has had at least one letter published in the Suburbanite. We now have the final piece in the puzzle.
After an exhaustive review of all those who have sent in a letter to the Suburbanite in the past decade, cross-checked against the list of attendees who have been at some of the non-televised meetings referenced in some of TeaneckBlog's posts, and matched against a database of writing samples of potential suspects, I have come to the incontrovertible conclusion that we have uncovered the identity of the TeaneckBlogster and that it can be none other than David Friedman. Though it could also be Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the Wrench.
Either way, I guess now I can collect on all the moolah in the "Identify the TeaneckBlog author pool". Pay up, everyone.
All of my letters printed in the Suburbanite have been preceded by a confirmatory phone call.
And what in particular about the letter made you think it was inauthentic?

Swurgle: Everytime I've written a letter to the Suburbanite, I've gotten a phone call confirming my identity.
Teaneck Blog: I have never gotten such a call.
I think that there are two factors that can account for that difference. One is whether the letter is e-mailed, or snail-mailed or faxed. The other is how well known you may be to the Suburbanite.
If you send your letter through a known e-mail address, particularly if your name is attached to it, I think the editors are more likely to assume it's legit. Then, if they're also familiar with your basic mind-set, they can look at the letter and say, "Yup, that letter definitely fits that ahole's character."
For this reason, I haven't had anyone call me since I started e-mailing my letters.
But I did have one e-mailed letter get "lost," and I do wonder about that, although I don't believe that the editor at that time had anything to do with it.
Remember, however: The Teaneck Suburbanite is now under a new regime. We don't really know what kind of procedures they've been following.
I'm for freedom of speech & freedom of the press. I'd be interested to see how the paper verified its authenticity.
Unfortunately, the Suburbanite continues to reach new lows.
And what in particular about the letter made you think it was inauthentic?
Well, as Steve Lonegan would never say, this letter is ridÃculo.
First off, the letter is so poorly written and so full of grammatical errors that even allowing for the usual Suburbanite typos, it seems like it has to be a prank. Second of all, the ostentatious use of the author's alleged religious affiliation is a red flag. It seems like a transparent attempt to cast aspersions on the Orthodox Jewish community without having to answer for them because the author is a self-identified "insider." Third of all, the reference to the rent control issue is comical. Even those who would abolish rent control would obviously not be doing so to "enhance their personal wealth" (except maybe Mayor Katz, who is a landlord, but he has remained true to his principles and abstained from involvement is this issue). That has got to be parody. The conspiracy theory paragraph is also funny enough to be a joke (the supposedly poorly kept secret of the backroom deals has not yet been revealed by anyone other than the letter writer, unless someone who is plugged into the Orthodox community referenced can testify otherwise). And finally, the outrageous demands for resignation and exile from Teaneck to protect "our reputation in the community" is icing on the cake of silliness that is this letter.
I'm leaning towards considering this a fake until proven otherwise, but I'm keeping an open mind. Please keep the responses coming.

With Anonymous's authentic assurance that Mr. Friedman doesn't exist, it may be premature to declare yourself the winner.
You have also made a big leap in assuming that the Blogger has had a letter published in the Suburbanite. This may have been just another instance of the Blogger choosing his words carefully.
Never mind the letter, how about the heading "Teaneck at odds..."
Since when does one writer, or even many, represent an entire township?

Since there seems to be no one with the name of the letter-signer in the Orthodox community, maybe it's time for the Advisory Board on Community Relations to call an emergency meeting and draft a resolution for consideration by the Council. Maybe we can get the County Prosecutor and the NJ Election Commission involved as well.
On the other hand, I doubt those that pushed for that type of action in the past would support it now.

Nice to see the blogger has a sense of humor.
Nice to see the blogger has a sense of humor.
Nice to see you demonstrate your inattention to detail yet again, as these comments were posted over 6 hours apart with much intervening thought and discussion.
There seems to be a David Friedman in Teaneck. Just look up on zabasearch.com, go to the advanced search window, and enter David Friedman in Teaneck NJ and one does show up on Downing Street.
I had a different address and checking zabasearch.com, I found both addresses listed.
I also checked and it seems I exist. However, there was no entry for Teaneck Blog. Is he authentic?
Zabasearch has outdated information and therefore it cannot count as verification that David Friedman is alive and well and living in Teaneck. Want proof of the inaccuracy, just go to zabasearch and put in names of family/friends who have moved out of Teaneck within the past few years.
Amazing how many idiots fall for the lies of the blogger.
This is crazy! I did a zabasearch on 2 deceased friends(passed away 16 years ago)and they both are listed with Teaneck addresses and were updated within the past 3 years!
Amazing how many idiots fall for the lies of the blogger.
Lies? Why don't you point out these lies for us so no more idiots fall for them in the future?
I just ran a search on Google for - "David Friedman" teaneck, nj - and found an online dinner journal from one of the local Teaneck shuls listing David Friedman as an ad sponsor.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the dinner journal does not verify the authenticity of every ad it receives.
You're probably right. There was a serious problem in Teaneck a few years back with a serial shul dinner ad poster running rampant in teaneck using false names.
Don't you just hate it when someone spends hundreds of dollars congratulating some stranger on being honored at a dinner under a false name.
It is clear that this "David Friedman" has been plotting this for years.
That's so cool that you were able to verify that the dinner journal only accepts ads from current Teaneck residents, and that in fact this was the same "David Friedman" who wrote the letter! You are a great researcher.
